Self-care has become a trendy new buzzword but its importance is not new. It simply means being cognizant of and taking the time to do those things that help you live well and improve both your physical health and mental health.
The active maintenance of your health and well-being can help manage stress, lower risk of illness, and increase energy. Even the smallest acts of self-care in your everyday life can have a big impact. Here are eight simple yet important things you can do:
Exercise regularly. Just 30 minutes of walking every day can help boost your mood and improve your health. Small amounts of exercise add up, so don’t be discouraged if you can’t do it all at once.
Stay hydrated and eat healthy, regular meals. A well-balanced diet and plenty of water can improve your energy and focus throughout the day. Remember to limit caffeinated beverages and alcohol consumption.
Prioritize sleep. Create and stick to a schedule, and make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Remember that blue light from electronic screens can make it harder to fall asleep, so reduce blue light exposure before bedtime.
Try a relaxing activity. Explore relaxation and wellness routines and apps, which may incorporate meditation, muscle relaxation, or breathing exercises. Set aside some regular time for these and other healthy activities you enjoy.
Set goals and priorities. Determine what needs to get done now and what can wait. Don’t give in to FOMO. It’s okay to say no to things especially if you start to feel like you’re taking on too much. And remember to be mindful of what you have accomplished at the end of each day, not what you have been unable to do.
Be thankful. Remind yourself daily of things you are grateful for. Be specific. Write them down at night, or do a mental review.
Focus on positivity. Identify and challenge negative and unhelpful thoughts.
Connect. Reach out to your friends or family members who can provide emotional support and practical help.
Managing your well-being looks different for everyone. It’s important to find what you need and enjoy – it may be a trial and error process to discover what works best for you.
While self-care is not a cure for mental illnesses, understanding what causes or triggers your mild symptoms and what coping techniques help can go a long way in managing your mental health.
